Immyâs letters were all the same, and although Daisy wrote back quite often, she never said much about what was happening at Flayton Camp. Immy would know all about basic training anyway. They were Jills of all trades while the army decided what to do with them, and several months after first donning a uniform, Daisy felt herself to be a seasoned recruit if nothing else, and she was laughing when she put Immyâs latest letter into her locker.
âBoyfriend?â Molly asked, knowing how avidly Daisy waited for letters from Glenn.
âSister. And she thinks Iâm the scatty one. She canât seem to keep her mind on one thing at a time. But sheâs chirpy enough, considering she does nothing more interesting that driving her middle-aged Captain around here, there and everywhere. Heâs in Intelligence or something.â
âLucky her.â
âYes, but you wouldnât want to do that, would you, Molly? I know youâre mad about car engines, but just driving and waiting around all day seems pretty dull to me. Anyway, it looks as if youâre going to get your wish to train as a proper mechanic, doesnât it?â
âFingers crossed,â Molly said, suiting the action to the words. âSo what was so funny then?â
âOh, Immy thinks Iâm either scrubbing out kitchens or sitting behind a desk warding off the cheeky devils trying to get an extra bit of leave.â
âWhich you have been. But you mean you havenât told her about the rest?â
âI havenât told any of them yet,â Daisy said. âIâm keeping it strictly to myself until I know for certain whatâs going to happen.â
âWhen are these people coming down to audition you?â
âIn a couple of weeksâ time, as far as I know. Itâs a bit vague, to be honest,â Daisy said, feeling as though her heart was about to turn cartwheels at the thought. âI canât believe that Naomi wants to audition as well, though. That was a turn-up, wasnât it?â
Molly grinned. âNot really. You could hardly imagine her getting her hands dirty at anything, could you?â
Daisy paused. âThatâs not what you think of me, is it?â
ââCourse not, silly. I think youâve got plenty of guts if you want to know. I couldnât face standing in front of hundreds of leering squaddies and singing my heart out. Iâd be frightened to death.â
Daisy laughed. âAnd it would help if you werenât tone-deaf, of course.â
âI know,â Molly said cheerfully. âBut what exactly is Naomi hoping to do?â
âHave you heard her sing?â
âGood Lord, you mean sheâs going to be in competition?â
âNo. Weâre thinking of forming a duo,â Daisy said. âItâs something I once thought about, and Naomi has quite a good voice, deeper than mine, so we complement one another. At the next dance, sheâs going to ask the compère if we can do a turn. A sort of try-out before the big event.â
It had seemed like a good idea at the time, but Daisy was wishing now that she felt as confident as she sounded. The monthly dance at the local Forces Club was hardly the same as entertaining a group of war-toughened troops.
